  Got up early to drive the car to the repair shop two miles south of where we live. With the engine light flashing and the car stalling, I figured the earlier I got the car on the road the less traffic I would encounter, so if I stalled and couldn’t start the car again, I wasn’t going to be bumper to bumper and getting a lot of people peeved. This worked. But I got to the shop an hour before it opened. I sat writing today’s poetry journal about my car, and then waited for the man to show up, greeted by the garage cats that rubbed against my legs – no doubt looking for food. Then, I walked down to Central Avenue looking for coffee on my way to the light rail station at 9th Street. None of the bodegas were open. I stopped in at a Spanish place on North and Central, where two ladies who couldn’t speak English giggled, both wearing Santa hats, and red shirts with reindeer. They were in a very festive mood, as was the Sheriff’s Department cop who ordered coffee after I did. ...

The watermelon caper Oct. 12, 2023

    When I said  she had been posting her video blog for about a year, it wasn't always under the blogger title she is running with. The oldest videos seem to be dealing with waking up in the morning and walking her dog. Her first three videos posted on this youtube site were basic images and music, she did not appear as a character. The fourth appears to be another mostly silent film with captions about her making a certain korean food for the first time and another about tacos. She speaks in a film about her hometown, but it's not the same as when she launches herself into the videos at a character, which seems to have occurred when she started video blogging about her horse riding. Rather than go all the way back in time, I picked one of her more recent posts from a month ago intrigued me. This involved her cutting up of a watermelon. Ending up in the Church Yard Dec. 22, 2023

    Almost four years after his passing, Pauly’s final resting place remains a mystery. We might have known had 2020 been an ordinary year, but his death predated the pandemic, and because his friends and family needed time to put together a proper wake following his leaving this mortal coil in January 2020, they delayed a month, only to have the COVID lockdowns rob us of any memorial. As time passed, the memorial appears to have become lost in the haze of other COVID deaths, and he joined all those whose passing largely went unmarked and then became less urgent, until finally, there seemed no reason to hold it after such a long time. I haven’t forgotten, and with his birthday coming up next week, I feel the urgency to find where he is or where his ashes have been scattered, so I can continue the ritual of Christmas Eve we established as far back as 1970.
