Birthday wishes Dec. 27. 2023

    Today is Garrick’s 74th birthday. His is the middle birthday in a pack that had Hank on Christmas Eve, and Pauly’s on Dec. 28. Garrick used to kid Pauly about they being the same age on Midnight between the two days, although with Pauly’s passing almost four years ago, we have all caught up and passed him by, just as we passed Hank after his passing back in the winter of 1995. Garrick was forced to retire earlier this year when his company finally shut down a parts manufacturer for which he worked for nearly 30 years and had hoped to stretch this to a full 30 years before officially retiring. Oddly enough, his company remained functioning throughout the COVID pandemic, partly because it was seen as “essential” in an era when that word gets misused frequently, though the parts they made apparently were necessary in keeping certain other really essential industries operating. Depending on what happens next Dec. 19, 2023

  Got up early to drive the car to the repair shop two miles south of where we live. With the engine light flashing and the car stalling, I figured the earlier I got the car on the road the less traffic I would encounter, so if I stalled and couldn’t start the car again, I wasn’t going to be bumper to bumper and getting a lot of people peeved. This worked. But I got to the shop an hour before it opened. I sat writing today’s poetry journal about my car, and then waited for the man to show up, greeted by the garage cats that rubbed against my legs – no doubt looking for food. Then, I walked down to Central Avenue looking for coffee on my way to the light rail station at 9th Street. None of the bodegas were open. I stopped in at a Spanish place on North and Central, where two ladies who couldn’t speak English giggled, both wearing Santa hats, and red shirts with reindeer. They were in a very festive mood, as was the Sheriff’s Department cop who ordered coffee after I did. ...

The rain that never came October 11, 2023

    With the threat of rain still hanging over Cape May on Saturday morning, we decided to play it safe and visit the indoor exhibit at the Physik Estate – the main building of which is the most historic of all buildings there with the possible exception of Congress Hall. The tour guide from MAC had informed us about an outdoor exhibit there, and I secretly hoped that the actors would be on the great lawn, dressed up in Victorian garb the way they used to do prior to the COVID pandemic. Indeed, many visitors also dressed up in period costumes, and I had seen several people on the mall on Friday night, though I’m not sure if they were tourists or actors. Unfortunately, neither actors nor dressed up tourists were on the law when we arrived, no doubt put off by the threat of rain, and so we wandered into the exhibit on quack cures of the 18th century – which included patent medicines.
